About Forest Hill Martial Arts

At Forest Hill Martial Arts, we believe martial arts should be practical, rewarding, and accessible to everyone. Our goal is to provide authentic training that develops real-world self-defence skills, physical fitness, confidence, and personal growth in a safe and supportive environment.

Founded and led by Sensei Peter Sims, Forest Hill Martial Arts is built upon more than four decades of martial arts training and years of teaching experience. Throughout that journey, Sensei Peter has trained across multiple martial arts systems. This diverse background provides a broad understanding of movement, timing, striking, self-defence, and traditional martial arts principles.

Our training combines traditional martial arts values with practical application. Students learn not only how to perform techniques, but also how to develop awareness, good judgement, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. Classes emphasise realistic self-defence, effective movement, and understanding how to avoid or manage conflict whenever possible.

Training at Forest Hill Martial Arts includes elements of traditional jujutsu, striking, movement, knife defence awareness, traditional and improvised weapons training. Students have the opportunity to explore disciplines such as bo staff, katana, wakizashi, other classical weapons, and everyday objects, gaining a deeper understanding of distance, timing, coordination, and body mechanics. Weapons training is taught progressively and safely, reinforcing principles that enhance all aspects of martial arts practice.

One of the core beliefs of our dojo is that martial arts should be adapted to the individual. Beginners are guided through clear, structured instruction, while more experienced students are encouraged to explore deeper levels of timing, flow, and application. Every student progresses at their own pace, with the focus placed on long-term development rather than short-term achievement.

We also believe that the benefits of martial arts extend far beyond physical techniques. Over the years, many students have achieved success in their personal and professional lives and have credited their martial arts training as an important part of that journey. The confidence, discipline, resilience, and awareness developed through training often become valuable tools that carry into everyday life.
